The Importance of Breakfast: Getting Off to a Good Start

The “most important meal of the day” is a phrase often used to describe breakfast but can one meal truly be so beneficial? Busy schedules often prohibit individuals from enjoying a nice meal, especially during the rush of getting dressed, ready and out the door in time for work. For many, this task becomes even more complicated when children are involved but sacrificing the first meal of the day shouldn’t be an option, regardless of time constraints.

According to the licensed dietitian Kathleen Zelman of WebMD at least this much is known about breakfast being the most important meal. “Skipping the morning meal can throw off your body’s rhythm of fasting and eating. When you wake up, the blood sugar your body needs to make your muscles and brain work their best is usually low. Breakfast helps replenish it.
If your body doesn’t get that fuel from food, you may feel zapped of energy -- and you'll be more likely to overeat later in the day.”

For those interested in losing weight, skipping meals and especially breakfast can often have the adverse effect for these reasons. An individual elects to not eat their first meal of the day in an effort to cut calories but then overeats later or digests less nutritious snacks and ultimately negates any benefit of the attempted calorie cutting method applied.
Instead, ingesting a healthy breakfast to start the day can lead to an individual having more energy, being more active and eating less during the day.

Calcium, fiber, iron and protein are generally present in typical breakfast foods and may prove more difficult to find through other meal options as the day progresses. Fruit, often a choice to start the day also provides essential vitamins and minerals and can be consumed in the form of various juices.
