The Importance of Breakfast: Getting Off to a Good Start

May 17, 2017

The “most important meal of the day” is a phrase often used to describe breakfast but can one meal truly be so beneficial? Busy schedules often prohibit individuals from enjoying a nice meal, especially during the rush of getting dressed, ready and out the door in time for work. For many, this task becomes even more complicated when children are involved but sacrificing the first meal of the day shouldn’t be an option, regardless of time constraints.

Having a plan helps to alleviate the rush felt in the mornings and by doing so one can create the time for a healthy meal instead of a quick, often unhealthy, substitute. Originating back in the early to mid 1400’s, breakfast comes from two words: break, fast. Break - interrupting the fast - abstinence from food or drink. Following dinner an individual fast until the next day and when a first meal is eaten the fast is broken, hence breakfast.

According to the licensed dietitian Kathleen Zelman of WebMD at least this much is known about breakfast being the most important meal. “Skipping the morning meal can throw off your body’s rhythm of fasting and eating. When you wake up, the blood sugar your body needs to make your muscles and brain work their best is usually low. Breakfast helps replenish it.
If your body doesn’t get that fuel from food, you may feel zapped of energy -- and you'll be more likely to overeat later in the day.”

For those interested in losing weight, skipping meals and especially breakfast can often have the adverse effect for these reasons. An individual elects to not eat their first meal of the day in an effort to cut calories but then overeats later or digests less nutritious snacks and ultimately negates any benefit of the attempted calorie cutting method applied.
Instead, ingesting a healthy breakfast to start the day can lead to an individual having more energy, being more active and eating less during the day.

Additional advantages of breakfast revolve around the food choices typically available at the beginning of the day. Typical breakfast foods serve as an answer to the question of why is breakfast important?
Calcium, fiber, iron and protein are generally present in typical breakfast foods and may prove more difficult to find through other meal options as the day progresses. Fruit, often a choice to start the day also provides essential vitamins and minerals and can be consumed in the form of various juices.

DJ’s Cafe provides a variety of options to meet your breakfast needs offering an exclusive menu devoted to helping you start the day off right. Eggs, benedicts, omelets and pancakes are all available including a nice selection of seasonal fruits and other sides. Oatmeal, yogurt and different bagels are also served at the three Denver area locations. Tips From Your Local Denver Restaurant on Staying Healthy

April 19, 2017

Staying healthy is on everyone’s mind. Being in optimum health is important for many reasons. It helps with productivity and overall happiness at work and home. Whether it’s planning workouts during the week, keeping your water bottle filled, or taking a break to fuel your body with health foods all of these can help to refresh your mind, body and spirit. Learn four ways to stay healthy during your work week from your local Denver restaurant.

1. Plan a Workout

Working out is one of the top ways to stay healthy for both your body and mind. It can be difficult to find the time during the week to be active but, because it is so important, make an effort to find something you like to do. Grab some friends and go for a walk in the park, sign up for a sports league after work or take a yoga class at your local gym. Mix it up with a few different types of activity each week.If you live close enough to work, biking to work is great exercise without needing to make time for exercising before or after work.

2. Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is so important. There are several components to staying hydrated throughout your work week including drinking the good old H2O, eating a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables and not eating or drinking an excessive amount of salty food or drinks containing alcohol. If you plan to go out after work or attend a BBQ, keep your drinking at a minimum. Nothing is worse than showing up for work the next day feeling dehydrated with a headache. Keep your weekday productivity up and use a water bottle at your desk - remind yourself to take little breaks to drink and refill your water bottle. If you’re not the biggest fan of plain old water, try grabbing a lemon or lime to flavor your water or, if that’s not doing the trick add a calorie free water flavoring. Learn more about tips for tastier water.

3. Bring Snacks

Many nutritionists recommend that you eat six small meals per day, so snack on! There are a lot of excellent and low-cost snack options to bring to work like beef jerky, hard boiled eggs, carrots, celery and cucumbers with hummus, apples, bananas, oranges or yogurt! Taking the time to eat healthy snacks throughout the day will give you energy and the break you need to recharge!

4. Choose a Healthy Lunch Option

Last but not least, taking a lunch break is so important. If you find yourself feeling frustrated with the work you are doing, stepping away and coming back to it an hour later can give you a new perspective. So take the time to step outside and grab a bite to eat, which will most likely help with your overall work satisfaction and productivity. There are plenty of healthy restaurants around Denver to try.
